Hooker Heroes

This is a pretty good set of pages. I like the part in the Ancient Times section about the Hetairae.
The concept of prostitution as a legal occupation has always made perfect sense to me. In fact, I think all of the sex industry is perfectly valid - stripping, pornography, etc. I simply don't see them as symptoms of the degeneration of society, as I don't see the open expression of sexuality (even in consumer forms) as abhorrent.
The Hetairae as a class is very intriguing to me. Though I'd think it would be more so as an order than a class of profession. I've always been of the opinion that there should be a sort of 'volunteer courtesan' organization.

Watch this:
Sisters of Gion -- Kenji Mizoguchi
Street of Shame -- Kenji Mizoguchi
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs -- Mikio Nasume
Sandakan No. 8 -- Kei Kumai (especially this one)
and think that prostitution being legal doesn't necessarily mean prostitution is respectable or easy.
