Article on Vacation Starvation:
Yet vacations can cure even the worst form of stress – burnout – by re-gathering crashed emotional resources, say researchers. It takes two weeks for this process to occur, however, which is why long weekends aren't vacations.

This is just as true for taking care of a hyperkinetic disabled toddler, too.

I never get 2 weeks off in a row, ordinarily. Predictably this does lead to burnout. About 4 years ago, after 3 years on the job, with 0 sick days and 0 days off ( my own business...it just wasn't an option ) I finally took a break. I got incredibly sick and ended up 3 weeks out of work with my dad covering for me at the shop.

Then a couple more years with just sporadic days off. I totally burned out the next time, cut myself back to not working behind the counter at all. I tried starting another business, which flopped. Meanwhile during my period of greatest apathy, the volume of business dropped off to less than half of what it once was.

I'm still recovering from that. Although it did give me some needed time off. it wasn't exactly vacation, and it wasn't exactly stressless... but it was time away from the grind.
