Oct. 5th, 2003 03:59 amI found http://www.fast-rewind.com/, which is a very detailed account of popular 80's movies.
I never thought of myself as a child of the 80s, as I didnt really pay attention to most culture until late high school. But there are just tons of movies I know on this list. Some Im a huge fan of (The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, Big Trouble in Little China, Blues Brothers, Battle Beyond the Stars) and others I just have very definite memories of (Eddie and the Cruisers, The Breakfast Club).
Maybe it was the fact that my father bought a VHS VCR very early. It was this big huge klunky thing that had a camera that attached to it for recording, so you have to lug the camera AND the huge VCR to tape. And you couldn't fast-forward or rewind while the tape was playing. But I remember it back as far as 1979. I remember my Dad bringing home videos on his way home from work (we lived in the country and Dad worked in the city - for a long time, there was only one video store in a 2 hour radius and it was an hour away).
I remember the Blues Brothers when it was on two tapes - I remember falling asleep during it as a kid. I watched a lot of 'mature' movies too, since my Dad didn't seem to mind. (This is way I am constantly confused about what Eleri's parents feel is appropriate for 13 yr old Kris to watch - I saw things like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and when I was like 10. When I went to watch a lot of movies in High School, I found that I had vague memories of a lot of the older ones already.
I wonder is this is true nostalgia, looking back and going - hey, that was so cool. Yeah I remember that!
I am very wary of the "Everything was so much better in the old days", but I have to admit that I like a lot of things from the Ol' Days. I like 70s and 80s films and music.
I have noticed I have a fear of growing old, in that I will no longer understand what is the current culture. I worry about that sort of 'these new fangled things confuse me' mentality. I still like new stuff. Pokemon didnt really bother me - it was just a little to cutesy for my tastes. I actually think Yu-Gi-Oh! is an interesting cartoon. There are some really cool cartoons out there, though there is a genre of sort of 'gross is funny' cartoons and cartoon styles that i'm not too impressed with (Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed Edd & Eddy, etc). They seem like Ren & Stimpy light - the gross factor without as much of the wit. Spongebob Squarepants is surprisingly funny and surreal.
Hmm... maybe I know more about kids' culture than I expected. maybe I'm just surprised by the length of my memory now. Yes, I rememeber Smurfs. I know why the sound effect in Mystery Men when Mr. Furious jumps off of the balcony is funny (spoiler: it's from the Six Million Dollar Man). But I also know about Jimmy Neutron and Dora the Explorer. Go figure.
Interesting factoid: In the movie They Live!, the most famous line, "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum" is actually an adlib.
I wonder where all the 90s films are. I consider myself a child of the 90s more than the 80s. But I have never really considered my influences in a time line like this.
What was there?
Silence of the Lambs, Wayne's World, Jurrasic Park, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Braveheart, Austin Powers, 5th Element, The Matrix, Sixth Sense, Toy Story, Clerks, From Dusk till Dawn, Pulp Fiction, Empire Records, Strange Days, Ghost, Hot Shots!, Fight Club, Twelve Monkeys, Total Recall, Gladiator, Goodfellas, The Truman Show, Shakespeare in Love, The Hudsucker Proxy, Blade, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Spice World, The Professional, Stargate, The Addams Family, Fallen, Mystery Men, Tank Girl, The Crow
Those are just ones I liked that I could list in 15 minutes. But a lot of those I had to remind myself by looking at lists of movies. I guess, like someone said to me, I don't think of them as '90s movies', as there isn't a clearly accepted '90s' atmosphere yet.
I wonder when the 80s became The 80s(tm)....
Another odd factoid. I know a good chunk about TV from before my time. Partially because I grew up when a lot of kids' TV, independent TV stations and such were all reruns. Who would I be without endless hours of I Love Lucy, Star Trek, Battlestar Galatica, Bugs Bunny, Popeye, and Tom and Jerry?
