I'm going to be starting an online game in the background I have been working on. It's long, so the intro text and such is in a cut tag below.
David stood on the roof of high apartment building, watching the last rays of sun disappear over the Austin skyline. It'd been a long day on the phones and he hated every minute of it.
As the sun set, the shadows began to creep up his body. Pools of darkness snaked up his legs like trails of spilled India ink stubbornly rebelling against gravity. He felt himself become enveloped. He closed his eyes and finally relaxed. It wrapped around him like a lover's embrace and enclosed him in a blanket of night.
David shook off his cocoon and the shadows dissipated like steam. He stretched. Unfurling the raven wings now on his back, he dived off of the building into the night sky.
The sun had set in Austin, Texas. For David, night was freedom.
---
Without looking, Hector bolted across the road. He dodged oncoming traffic at a dead run and scrambled through the open gate of the junkyard. The gang bangers behind him pulled out their pistols and began to shoot. Hector grabbed a box full of bolts on the ground and flung it haphazardly behind him. Sparks filled the air behind him as each bullet was deflected by a separate airborne bolt. He dived behind the empty shell of an old 1978 Chevy unscathed.
The eastside vatos strolled into the yard, guns out. Suddenly the gate behind them slammed shut on its own. Hector came out of his hiding spot.
"Hey!" he yelled. "You're on my turf now, pendejos. I'm king here."
Just then, the old 1978 Chevy revved up and sped at the bangers on tireless wheels.
---
Collin rushed into his room and emptied the contents of his backpack onto his bed. He'd skipped school so he'd be alone the whole day. He tossed aside the Heinlien books and pulled out his compass, protractor and a few similar instruments that he'd designed himself. Next he laid out the paper where he'd scribbled his data and calculations.
He needed a vessel, of sorts. He looked around and decided on the "Anatomy Coloring Book" that his parent's got him a few Christmases ago. It was big enough, especially if he used both open pages. Plus, he could close it - it would be inconspicuous and portable at the same time. Plus he couldn't resist the pun involved.
He sat on his bed, pulled up his tools and put down the book open in front of him. He placed the GPS he'd worked for all summer to buy in the middle of the book. He knew he'd have to have to have exact coordinates for the procedure. He scribbled some more notes, did a few calculations. Then, with compass in hand, he began.
The transformations took two hours over all. It could have been a much more complex task, but Collin only needed light and vibrations to get through. He'd had a brainstorm in the middle of the process and figured out how to make the destination point mobile with just an extra MacKenzie mapping off of the orientation of the book. He'd had to backtrack a bit on some of his calculations, but that seems to happen a lot.
Finally, he had a closed anatomy book in front of him on his bed. He opened up to page 53 and the image opened into a clear, full-audio, real-time picture of the showers of the girl's locker room. In a few minutes, the period should be over and the girls would flood in from gym class.
Collin had been taunted all his life for being a nerd. But he was one of the few who understood the power of truly advanced mathematics.
---
Ever since the explosion at the mall, I could feel them, like faded ghosts in the back of my mind. That is, except, when they were horny. Whenever they were aroused, they snapped into clarity in my mind. It was like I was in two bodies at once. I nearly ran off the road the first time it happened. But after a few times, I figured out how to take in both my world and theirs at the same time.
It was a good thing too, because these girls turned out to be major sluts. Well, something about the explosion made them into that. Life had changed for these women since they were in the explosion and I felt every debauched second of it. And I was really beginning to like it.
Something different happened today though. Jessi (how had gotten a job at Major Hottie's Adult Video and Toy Store so she could provide 'demonstrations' to lonely customers) was at work when some guy snuck up behind her and kissed her on the back of the neck. She spun around and was facing someone I recognized. He was the guy who'd kissed me in the mall, a few minutes before the store blew up.
He smiled and slipped a hand inside her pants. As he fingered her, he said something to Jessi that she didn't understand: ruzh ilur gora mazhparibat. 'xatiledor agora. ike wisat iwuba- lot araku.
Then he chuckled and left, leaving Jessi feeling empty and wet, and me confused and wet. You see, I understood what he said. "Meet me at the mall. I'll be at the Hot Dog on a Stick. Bring some money, you're paying."
The above are scenes from my world. It's an RPG and story background that I have been working on. And I'm ready to start running part of it. I'll be doing online and face-to-face games around it. Don't worry, there is enough room in my world for multiple plotlines.
The theme is the resurgence of magick into the modern world. The rules of magick might be different than you are used to. You'll play someone who has yet to be affected (but will be very quickly) or someone who has just been affected. Your job is one of exploration - finding out what you are and what the world is becoming. You can explore, you can build empires, you start secret wars, whatever you like. It's really geared to be like a Sim game - you do things and see how the world responds. If you choose to be a hermit, the world goes on without you.
There isn't an overarching plot, per se. Just the march of history. Certain things will happen, you can react as you like. You can try to change some of them, some of them you'll be unable to do anything about.
The mechanics of the game are going to be mostly diceless. However, each player gets a card from a special Tarot in the game. You can 'play' this card at any time - each card has a different effect which will affect the progress of play. I'll tell you what the card does when you get it. You'll only have one card at a time, unless you do something really cool.
I'll be doing this online. This will probably mean over AIM and email and possibly an IRC channel for people who want to interact. Also, I am considering an LJ Community for this, as a sort of collaborative story like you see in
reparo.
One thing to remember that online games tend to be slow, and the storytelling sometimes is a bit non-linear. If one person replies to an email and two people reply to THAT action at the same time, we have to figure out what happens. There will be a lot of juggling and fiddling throughout the game.
Generally, I just need a write up on the character - personality, history, what they look like, where they live, etc.
As a note, I'd suggest that you make characters that are inquisitive and exploratory in nature - otherwise, the game is going to be very boring for you.
Also, you decide how magickally you want your character to evolve. You can choose one of the Breeds below. Or you can choose to let me decide what you become during role-playing. Or you can make up something of your own (usually, you'll be a one of a kind, but I will entertain new Breeds or societies, etc).
I also encourage people to work together on character concepts (such as developing characters who are a group of friends and such). People who are likely to be around each other make means players can interact with each other easier, as opposed to just talking to my NPCs ;).
The Breeds are sort of, but not quite, magickal species. Some are just people grouped together by a common magickal practice. The information here is brief. Even most of the magickal people in the world haven't encountered other magickal types to know more than just themselves (that will change over time, though). I'll let you know what have and haven't heard based on your background.
Nocturnes - These are people who's magickal nature only comes out at night. During the day, they are perfectly normal people (and they don't like that one bit).
Luminaries - These are people who are sort of 'sun elementals' who can generate sunshine in its many forms.
Raptured - The Raptured are magickally charged sex machines. Anyone who's read my story Rapture has seen them in there.
Sovereigns - They draw power from the land they claim and gain some of its nature and drawbacks as well.
Sidewalkers - People in tune with road and rail.
Techgnostics - People who turn in, turn off and drop out by symbiotically merging with technology.
Clarkean Scientists - Scientists proficient in miraculous sciences that are so advanced that they ARE magick as well.
There is more, but I'm not giving away everything now. :)
This is all sort of a work in progress. Questions and ideas are welcome. IM me or email me at lakem at comcast dot net.
