Update on my mini-drama with my landlords

I went down to talk to the office about the nasty note I got. I told them I didn't know taht I wasn't supposed to dump stuff in there, as I'd seen other people dump stuff in there. They said taht those peopel had paid before hand. So I said I had no intention of trying to get something wihtout paying for it properly and offered to pay.

I also told them about the maintanence guy who didn't stop me or tell me that I wasn't supposed to dump it in there. Turns out he assumed I'd already talked to the office and they 'found out' about me by him mentioning it to the office and the office saying 'I'd don't know what you are talking about, no one has asked us.'

So they agreed to put a note in our file saying it was an honest misunderstanding and that I paid for it as soon as I realized it was a pay service. They weren't nasty about it at all and just asked me to make sure to ask next time (which I really should have in the first place).

So it cost a little extra money, but it's all worked out.
